Cebu may bid to be future host of Ironman

Following in the footsteps of the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines event, local event organisers may be bidding to bring a full Ironman event to Cebu in the Philippines.

“A lot of people from Manila have been asking us to hold an Ironman competition here because Cebu is more accessible than Camarines Sur,” said Perl Jacalan, Managing Director at local firm Advertising Services & Promotions (ASAP).

Camarines Sur hosted the Philippines’ first Ironman 70.3 event in 2009, with a field of around 400 and the event taking place at the Camarines Sur Water Park Complex.

Local organisers feel that Cebu has the facilities and the infrastructure to host a full Ironman competition.

According to local media reports, holding an Ironman in Cebu would eliminate a 10-hour bus ride that participants had to take to get to Camarines Sur. Having an international airport in proximity to Cebu is also an added bonus.

Philippine triathlon record holder Noynoy Jopson and triathlon events organiser Oscar ‘Boying’ Rodriguez agreed. Jopson said Cebu has always been shortlisted as a venue for an Ironman.

“We have a big advantage. Aside from an international airport, we have more accommodation as compared to Camarines Sur, where they had to limit the number of participants,” he said.

However, Jacalan at ASAP said concrete plans have yet to be made, given the preparation time required and the need for full support of the local government.
