A record breaking sell-out for Ironman Australia 2011 saw the event fill up general entry places in just under eight hours. The 2011 Ironman Australia race has therefore seen over 1,500 combined entries taken for the Ironman Australia and Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie events – the latter to be held simultaneously.
Entries opened for the 26th edition of the race at 12pm Australian Eastern Standard Time, and were closed just before 8pm the same day. According to World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), the interest in the 2011 event was unprecedented, following a sell-out just days before at Ironman Western Australia and Ironman New Zealand set to sell-out within days.
The 2011 Ironman Australia event will take place on Sunday 1 May and features 40 qualifying slots to the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship, held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie is an official qualifying event for the 2011 Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship, held in Phuket, Thailand.
In a brief rundown of entries in the Ironman Australia event alone, over 50% of the field is from the home state of New South Wales, with Queensland taking 20% and Victoria the third-most represented state with 16% of competitors.
Due to the rapid sell-out and the large number of international competitors that have missed out due to unfavourable time zones, thirty (30) special entry positions for Ironman Australia 2011 have been activated for international residents and are expected to be taken quickly.
Those interested should contact australia@ironman.com to request a special international spot – stating your name and country of residence.
