Milano City Triathlon lands in centre of Milan

Intended to become a permanent fixture in its sporting calendar, on 25 July, Milan will host its first international triathlon event. Athletes will compete over the standard Olympic distance of 1.5K swim, 40K bike and10K run.

Following in the footsteps of other major European cities such as Hamburg, Vienna, Madrid, London and Kitzbuhel – the organisers feel that the Milano City Triathlon marks a turning point in Milan’s sporting history.

I AM Sport Events & Consulting is organising the event, with a key objective to build a high impact race with a strong international footprint. The company was created by friends and triathletes Mark Gallienus, Stefano and Andrea Leone Vasco.

The initial objective is a strong first outing for Milan’s inaugural triathlon, with a deliberately limited number of participants to test the organisational structure and build the momentum and proof of concept for subsequent years.

I AM Sport Events & Consulting noted that "The choice fell on Milan for the many possibilities that this city gives us, first of all, the possibility of designing pathways accessible, fun, yet innovative in terms of tradition and modernity.

“Milan also has adequate facilities to host international sports tourism that will bring hundreds of athletes and accompanying persons as well as a proven ability to host major sporting events. We thank the City of Milan and the region, which initially believed in our project and have supported us with enthusiasm in helping to solve all the paperwork, logistics and administration.

“The support of FITR (Italian Triathlon Federation), the Road Runners Club of Milan and professional athletes who every day give us their advice has been invaluable to us and encourages us to continue on this road to spread the culture of triathlon in Italy.”

For this first edition, the organisers decided to limit the number of participants to 300, while maintaining an affordable entry fee, at €80 for Senior category triathletes (20-40 years) and Masters (over 40 years), with €15 for Junior athletes (up to 20 years). The prize money allocated for Elite athletes amounts to €10,000 in total.

Registration opened on 7 June and will close on 18 July or until the race limit is reached. After the race all participants, athletes, volunteers, professionals, authorities and operators will be invited to a gala dinner followed by a party with DJ sets during the award ceremony.
