Eurobike 2012 Awards

Winners of the 2012 Eurobike Awards accepted their honours yesterday, the first day of the Eurobike show, which runs from 29 August to 1 September 2012 in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

439 award entries from 28 countries were received this year, compared to 430 entries from 27 countries in 2011. A total of 84 products were able to convince the panel of judges and were the proud recipients of the Eurobike Award. The eight most outstanding innovations were honoured with a Gold award.

All the award-winning products are on display during the entire tradeshow in a special exhibition in Foyer West on the Friedrichshafen Exhibition Grounds. (The Eurobike GREEN Award was not presented this year – the jury regretted to report that the products entered were unable to completely convince them in their entirety in terms of environmental friendliness and sustainability.)

8 winners of the Eurobike GOLD award 2012:

Category: Mountain Bike
Product: Air 9 RDO – Racing Bike
Manufacturer: Niner Bikes, Torrance/California, USA
Design: Niner Bikes, Torrance/California, USA
As Eurobike points out, ‘The Niner Air 9 RDO is a racing bike with purposeful lines and trimmed profiles throughout. The Air 9 RDO’s smaller PF30 shell eliminates the need for an alloy insert and allows the use of smaller junctions and profiles. The rear brake mount is tucked inside the staying curves to distribute twisting forces evenly, permitting smaller caliper mounts and decreased wall thicknesses. Even the headset races in the head tube are moulded carbon for the best weight savings.’

Category: Clothes
Product: Protective – Biking shoes
Manufacturer: Thaler Sports GmbH & Co KG, Gevelsberg/Germany
Design: Thaler Sports GmbH & Co KG, Gevelsberg/Germany
‘The Protective is a biking shoe for e-cyclists and regular-pedal cyclists alike. Its key feature is the 0.6-mm inner sole with absolute lateral stiffness but with longitudinal flexibility for the ball of the foot.’

Category: Clothes
Product: SCOTT AMT – Ultra lightweight shirts & shorts
Manufacturer: SCOTT SPORTS SA, Givisiez/Switzerland
Design: SCOTT SPORTS SA, Givisiez/Switzerland
‘This mountain-bike outerwear wears well under even the most gruelling conditions thanks to its ultra-lightweight, extremely durable material: highly functional stretch fabrics, welded hems and an uncompromising, anatomical fit are unbeatable arguments in favour of this lightweight collection.’

Manufacturer: KTM Fahrrad GmbH, Mattighofen/Austria
Design: KTM Fahrrad GmbH, Mattighofen/Austria
‘This carrier bike is designed to make shopping trips more comfortable and convenient than ever before. A reinforced frame with an extra-low ‘step through’ that can carry loads weighing up to 150kg in total meets all the most important needs.’

Category: Special Bikes
Product: Silkroad Xplore – Travel bike with pinion transmission
Manufacturer: tout terrain Fahrräder & Ausrüstung OHG, Gundelfingen/Germany
Design: Thomas Harter, Kai Bendixen, Oliver Römer SEED Design | Engineering | Consulting, Gundelfingen/Germany
‘The Silkroad Xplore combines maximum functionality with perfect handling. The pinion transmission is integrated centrally into the frame and it is the first time that such a transmission has been used in combination with a steel frame and a travel bike to provide for worry-free cycling.’

Category: Racing Bike
Product: supersix evo black – Racing bike
Manufacturer: Cycling Sports Group Europe, Basel/Switzerland
Design: Cycling Sports Group Europe, Basel/Switzerland
‘The SuperSix EVO is a road racing machine. It is the perfect blend of all the key performance factors: weight, stiffness, strength, compliance, handling and aerodynamics. The EVO was designed for serious road racers and breaks the mould for elite racing machines. It is extremely light – at less than 700g, it sports the lightest production frame in the world, extremely stiff – it has the best stiffness-to-weight ever recorded, an incredible 142.3 Nm/deg/kg and extremely strong – it even outperforms most aluminium frames in destructive and fatigue testing.’

What the jury had to say: “It is one of the lightest production frames in the world, absolutely safe with great handling stability. It sets new standards for what is possible that will be almost impossible for the competition to beat. The Evo provides a perfect ride, and that’s worth Gold!”

Category: Parts/Components
Product: RT8 TT – Hydraulic racing bike brake system
Manufacturer: MAGURA, Bad Urach/Germany
Design: 5TH DIMENSION, Munich/Germany
‘A revolution in braking systems for triathlons and time trialling. The world’s lightest and quickest hydraulic rim brake. Its braking strength and good modulation set new standards in triathlon and time-trial machines, thus enabling effective speed management on descents and before curves. It features four key performance factors: high braking power, fine modulation, light weight and an aerodynamic shape that was optimized in a wind tunnel.’

What the jury had to say: “This hydraulic racing bike brake system makes it possible to stop on a dime, which is particularly important for time trialling and in triathlons. Its light weight is also unbeatable!”

The coveted Eurobike Award was presented for the eighth time this year to honour innovations in the bicycle industry. The response to the competition, which is hosted by Messe Friedrichshafen and conceived and organized by iF, remains extremely positive; the number of entries increases each year.

All of the award winners will be presented in the iF online exhibition on the iF website at
