FIBO heads out of Essen on a high

FIBO, the fitness industry and nutrition show, which since 1991 has had its home in Essen, Germany, relocates next year to Cologne. As a primary reason for the move to Cologne, the show organizers cite the unabated growth requirements for floor space at the annual event.

The organizers have also heralded another record-breaking year for FIBO in 2012. The event, which took place last week, was a reported sell-out. With 65,800 visitors, up from 58,100 last year, the organizer Reed Exhibitions noted a significant increase of 13.2% in attendance levels.

A total of 612 exhibitors from 35 countries (up 5.3% from 581 exhibitors in 2011) showed the latest trends, products and training, and therapy for the fitness, wellness and healthcare markets.

“21 years ago, we were a funky, fitness and bodybuilding event. Today we are an international trade show for fitness, wellness and health,”said Hans-Joachim Erbel, Managing Director at Reed. “This is a development that we owe to the unique partnership with the entire team at [FIBO venue] Messe Essen.”

Erbel regretted the move from Essen to Cologne, but he also described it as inevitable, given the current and long-term space needs of the growing FIBO event.

Since 2005, FIBO has been on the up and up, with 70% more exhibitors, 60% more visitors and 40% more floor space rented. As plans are drawn up for 2013, at the outset FIBO is already adding a further 15,000m² of stand space to keep pace with demand.

“More trade visitors, a significant increase of international attendees and a gratifyingly strong domestic market – they made sure that the number of health club operators and visitors from the health sector have risen again,” said a visibly satisfied FIBO Director Olaf Tomscheit.

65% of FIBO visitors are fitness industry and health club specialists; almost one in three of them traveled from abroad (versus 30% in 2011).

The largest pillar of FIBO, the market for health clubs, were nationally and internationally represented this year. In addition to the operators of fitness centres, FIBO has increasingly attracted trade visitors from the health professions. Here, the FIBOmed exhibition area and FIBOmed-organized seminar series were a key attraction. One in three visitors are also reportedly interested in training equipment and practice facilities in the area of physical therapy and medicine.

The next FIBO takes place on 11-14 April 2013 in Cologne, Germany.
