Now in its 35th year of running, the Newport Beach Triathlon in California remains one of the longest-standing triathlons in the world. On 21 October in the scenic Newport Beach Back Bay more than 700 athletes will swim, bike and run through the Eastbluff area of Newport Beach at the 2012 Kring and Chung Newport Beach Triathlon.
Participating in this year’s race along with elite, amateur and newbie triathletes, will be Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack, the 2007 and 2010 Ironman World Champion. McCormack, a long-time friend to event organiser Pacific Sports, has competed and won the Los Angeles Triathlon (2000 and 2001), Cleveland Triathlon (2002 and 2003), and Santa Catalina Triathlon (2009).
McCormack joins the Newport Beach Triathlon a week after competing in the 2012 Ironman Championships in Kona. A native of Australia, McCormack is one of the sport’s most decorated athletes and will most certainly raise the competitive spirit at this year’s triathlon in Newport Beach as amateur athletes will have the unique opportunity to race against one of the sport’s greats.
In addition to the two adult distance courses, this year’s Newport Beach Triathlon also offers two different youth courses. First time youth triathletes will not only be able to experience the sport in one of Southern California’s most scenic cities, but also have prime viewing access to a true champion of the sport.
President and CEO of Pacific Sports, Jack Caress, was very pleased to hear McCormack had decided to compete in another Pacific Sports produced event. “It is great to have McCormack competing in this year’s Newport Beach Triathlon,” said Caress.
“It offers our athletes an opportunity to race and compete against one of the sport’s most well-known and decorated professional athletes. And who knows, maybe one of this year’s youth participants could be the next Chris McCormack.”
Online registration is still open at NewportBeachTriathlon.com and will be available in person at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach from 10:00 to 16:00 PST on Saturday 20 October.
