SiS Ambassador Rebecca Romero goes long at Kona

Olympic and World Champion Cyclist Rebecca Romero MBE completed her first Ironman World Championship race in Kona, Hawaii, last weekend. Romero, fuelled by SiS products and sheer determination, clocked an impressive finishing time of 11:39:08, placing her 46th in the female 30-34 category. This is a great achievement, especially for an athlete who is new to the ultra-endurance sport, having started competing only this year.

According to Rebecca Romero, the first woman in British Athletics’ history to win medals in two separate Olympic events, her focus is now on her Sports Performance Consultancy business where she will be passing on her knowledge, expertise and experience within sport performance to others to help them achieve their potential too.

After the gruelling experience, Rebecca called the Kona race by far one of the hardest things she had ever done. “In my training over the past year I have had to work really hard to build from scratch two new sports of swimming and running. I recognized from the beginning that nutrition was fundamental in order for me to achieve the results that I wanted, so I made sure I trialled and tested my nutrition regime within my training,” she commented.

“I took SiS GO Electrolyte and SiS GO Gels on the bike, which was vital in this race, as the challenging temperatures and general racing conditions proved to be a far cry from the conditions of my training rides and racing experience at Ironman UK. I saw a lot of people suffering out on the bike and the run, it is not an environment that you can easily train to race in,” she continued.

Science in Sport (SiS), the sports nutrition business of Provexis plc, signed up Rebecca earlier in the year to be the triathlon brand ambassador for the company.

Founded in 1992, SiS produces two main sports nutrition ranges for professional and amateur athletes: SiS GO, comprising gels, powdered drinks and energy bars to help preparation and performance; and SiS REGO powders and protein bars which aid recovery after training or an event.

With a strong heritage in cycling, SiS is official sports nutrition supplier to Pro Team Astana, Katusha and Radioshack Nissan Trek; and supplies sports nutrition requirements to Rapha Condor Sharp, Node 4 Giordana and the Endura Racing teams. It is also official supplier of sports drinks and nutrition to the GB Rowing Team.

Triathlon represents a key growth area for SiS, as the company builds on its expansion plans.

Speaking to triathlonbusiness.com earlier this year – John Clarke, the former GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) senior executive, and Non-Executive Director of Provexis noted the importance of triathlon to SiS.

“It is very important as triathlon is an extreme endurance sport,” Clarke said. “Going back to the point on credibility, any sports nutrition brand that can convince elites and extreme athletes about performance benefits will do well. It is these athletes that truly understand and appreciate the benefits of good, credible sports nutrition.”
