The XTERRA World Tour will return to Australia in 2013 under the guidance of Andrew O’Loughlin at Limelight Sports. XTERRA’s mission Down Under is clear — ‘deliver the best beachside off-road triathlon and trail run events for the growing tribe of XTERRA athletes in Australia.’
“We are really excited to be bringing XTERRA to Australia. With the global and local growth of events with an adventurous nature, in particular off-road triathlons and trail runs, we believe the time is right for Australia to become part of the iconic XTERRA series,” said O’Loughlin, the Managing Director of Limelight Sports.
“Not only is this an event for professional triathletes, but it is a challenging and fun opportunity for those people who like to keep fit and take on something new. I can’t think of a better setting than along some of Australia’s best beaches on the Great Ocean Road! We can’t wait.”
The inaugural event for 2013 will be called the XTERRA Great Ocean Road off-road triathlon and will be accompanied by a trail run in Anglesea, Victoria, on Sunday 7 April 2013.
“We are thrilled to offer our Aussie friends an avenue to pursue XTERRA racing in one of the most scenic areas in all of Australia,” said XTERRA President Janet Clark (an Aussie herself).
The event will be a serious proposition for the serious XTERRA athlete, as 15 qualifying spots into the 2013 XTERRA World Championship on Maui will be up for grabs. The course will take participants on the famous Surf Coast Walk and along one of Australia’s most pristine beaches.
The events will also focus heavily on the weekend warrior, ‘who likes to keep fit, take on new challenges and is tired of tedious running tracks.’
Of note, the annual XTERRA New Zealand Championship race in Rotorua will take place the following weekend on 14 April 2013, providing an ‘opportunity for locals and foreigners alike to combine XTERRA racing and sight-seeing into one great vacation.’
