Competitors, communities and local businesses are set to join in an IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire finale at the historic Shugborough Estate in the summer of 2017 – as the event’s finishing line ‘moves to a new home in 2018’.
Staffordshire County Council became custodians of the estate in 1966, but on 1 November this year returned the management of the estate to the National Trust. As the National Trust wishes to focus on conservation of the estate and parklands, this is the last year to see Shugborough incorporated in the IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire event, and a new venue for the run element of the course is now being looked at.
Kevin Stewart, Managing Director of IRONMAN UK said “We have appreciated the opportunity to launch a new event with Shugborough Estate as a backdrop and we know athletes have enjoyed this quintessentially English setting. The National Trust has its criteria in managing the sustainability of the estate and we look forward to establishing a new home for the event in Staffordshire.”
As the IRONMAN organising team points out, the good news is that there is still time to ‘book a place in history and experience racing at the stunning setting of Shugborough for the last time’. Since its inauguration in 2015, IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire has quickly become a firm favourite and the fastest selling event on the IRONMAN UK calendar.
Mark Winnington Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, said “Staffordshire as a county provides a spectacular backdrop for the event and nowhere more so than the Shugborough Estate.
“While IRONMAN will be continuing in the county, this will be the last chance for people to sign up to cross the finishing line at Shugborough on June 18th. The event is great for highlighting what a fantastic county we all live and work in and I am sure people will be showing their support once again this year.”
This year the event saw over 2,000 competitors complete a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile half marathon, starting at Chasewater, passing through Cannock Chase before culminating at the historic Shugborough Estate.
IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire is the first of six events on the IRONMAN UK calendar for 2017, followed by IRONMAN 70.3 UK, IRONMAN UK, IRONMAN Dublin, IRONMAN Wales and IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth.
