The full distance PPD IRONMAN North Carolina event will not continue in 2017. Previously known as the PPD Beach2Battleship Full Distance triathlon, the event was acquired back in 2015 along with the PPD Beach2Battleship Half Distance triathlon.
In 2016, rebranded as PPD IRONMAN North Carolina presented by New Hanover Regional Medical Center and PPD IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina presented by New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the two IRONMAN events both took place on Saturday 22 October 2016.
The 2016 full distance event was hit by Hurricane Matthew, which took its toll on the region and the race. Conditions on the ground in October meant that the organisers shortened the bike leg of the full distance event from 112 miles to 56 miles. IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina was played out in full.
A statement about the cancellation of PPD IRONMAN North Carolina in 2017 was released on the IRONMAN website:
After careful consideration, IRONMAN North Carolina will not continue for 2017; we will put all efforts into making IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina a top-notch late season race for athletes. We appreciate the efforts and support of the city as well as our volunteers, partners, and everyone else involved in putting on the dual-event this past year and look forward to continued support for the future IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina event that will continue.
We appreciate our athletes’ dedication and understand the disappointment that some will have in not being able to race a full-distance event in that location. We encourage those athletes to consider IRONMAN Maryland, IRONMAN Louisville and IRONMAN Florida.
