The League of America Bicyclists has announced the 2017 National Bike Summit… ‘where advocates, bike industry leaders, local decision makers, engineers and planners will convene to discuss, learn, experience and advocate for better bicycling.’ The event will be held on 6-9 March 2017, at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel.
This event builds the lobbying group’s movement for 2017 and beyond. A focus will be on regional planning, national and local messaging and the road map of the League’s work in advancing the bicycling movement. There will be networking opportunities, keynote addresses from top government officials, workshops highlighting advocacy ideas and an organized Lobby Day on 8 March to bring the ‘pro-bicycling message to our elected officials on Capitol Hill’.
According to League Interim Executive Director Bill Nesper, “The Summit is an opportunity for bike advocates, educators and planners from around the country to gather and exchange ideas. We look forward to sharing the recent accomplishments from the Bicycle Friendly America program and listening to how we can continue to build the program in the coming years.”
Among the highlights of the 2016 Summit were Mobile Workshops. This year, these tours to Bicycle Friendly Businesses (BFBs) National Public Radio and World Bank tours are back by popular demand. Additional Mobile Workshops will visit BFB The National Geographic Society and new innovative facilities in DC, hearing directly from the District Department of Transportation, Washington Area Bicyclist Association and the Downtown DC Business Improvement District, to see how they worked together to make improvements happen.
There will also be a behind-the-scenes look at Amtrak, including a dialogue with Amtrak officials on how to improve service for bicyclists. There will be a bike tour of the University of Maryland, College Park, campus with college administrators. Other guided bike tours of DC will also be available.
As part of the League’s new Active Transportation Leadership Institute, the Summit will also feature training for local and state advocates.
The League would like to thank its sponsors, including Gold sponsors New Belgium Brewing and REI; and Silver sponsors, Adventure Cycling, Alta Planning + Design, American Specialty Insurance, Capital BikeShare, Dero, Fuji Bikes, Iteris, The Helen & William Mazer Foundation, Saris, The Specialized Foundation and The US Department of Transportation.
The League of American Bicyclists is… ‘leading the movement to create a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone. As leaders, our commitment is to listen and learn, define standards and share best practices to engage diverse communities and build a powerful, unified voice for change.’
