More than 20,000 expected for 34th edition of Roc d’Azur

After the summer holidays, thousands of mountain bike enthusiasts from around the world will make a pilgrimage to Fréjus in southeastern France for the 34th edition of Roc d’Azur. Taking place on 4-8 October 2017, the MTB racing and expo at Roc d’Azur attract more than 20,000 to the shores of the Mediterranean, for ‘the largest off-road cycling happening in the world’. Over five days there will be 33 events in the off-road landscape between the sea and mountains.

In addition to the main event, the Roc d’Azur, the Mediterranean event remains a forerunner in terms of sporting challenges. Event organiser A.S.O notes that ‘it is also the opportunity to discover or try new types of events’. The Roc Gravel, which debuted in 2016 at Fréjus, returns in a lengthened format, and a trekking version. The Roc Trophy is also back. It is the first sold out event of this edition and ‘distinguishes the most versatile racers at the end of a stage race and includes the Roc Marathon and the Roc d’Azur’.

A.S.O adds that the youngest competitors haven’t been forgotten either. The Roc Draisienne for younger riders has been bolstered, becoming a proper championship, on a purpose-built course.

There will be more than race action in the local Var countryside. Between the races, amateurs and professionals will mingle in the aisles of the Roc d’Azur expo, which is ‘a global reference’. No less than 100,000 people are estimated, and will encounter a revamped organisation of the expo spaces, by theme, in order to facilitate specific visitor interest areas.

The Roc Test Camp also returns with a specific platform for all product tests. Here, equipment can be pushed to the limits, with new test tracks that have been made more complex. Finally, a dedicated area for professionals, the all-new Hard Roc Café, will also promote experience sharing.
