Ethan Bennett is running 3,289 miles across America in only 97 days – covering 40 miles a day, 7 days a week, to raise money for the fight against cancer. His journey is called the Run to Fight.

After losing his mother to cancer, at age 17, Bennett decided to dedicate his life to helping put a stop to the deadly disease. “At first I used running as a way to cope with my grief,” Bennett said. “I hated running but I didn’t know what else to do. I needed an escape, so I ran away from the pain, letting a small piece of it stick to the pavement with each step.

“I was half-way through the San Francisco Marathon when I got the idea for the Run to Fight,” Bennett said. “I wanted my running to do for others what it had done for me. I wanted my running to help heal.”

That was when he vowed to find a way to use his newfound talent to raise money for the fight against cancer and do what few have dared try. Bennett decided to run from New York to California in one long stretch, finishing with a light cool down, the San Francisco Marathon!

Bennett began his run on 21 April 2012 and has kept a steady pace. Running 40 miles a day, 7 days a week, leaves little time for rest, as Bennett races to make it in time for the San Francisco Marathon on 29 July.

“I have some great family, friends and sponsors supporting me,” said Bennett. “H2O Overdrive is one that I actually sought out. I knew I needed the best fuel for my body possible, something that wouldn’t quit on me… When you’re running the equivalent of one and a half marathons a day, only the best of the best will cut it (laughs). Yeah, H2O Overdrive made the cut… big time.”

Innovative Health Solutions LLC (IHS) is contributing an ample supply of its sports hydration beverages, H2O Overdrive and H2O Overdrive HYDRATE for the Run to Fight. “We were so impressed by Ethan’s courage and determination,” said Randy Olshen, co-founder of IHS. “He’s got a long road ahead of him, and we’re very honoured to have been given the chance to sponsor him.”

H2O Overdrive and H2O Overdrive HYDRATE are sports beverages designed to ‘hydrate and energize at the cellular level with a balanced electrolyte matrix, a precision protein to carbohydrate ratio and over 30 essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids.’

Originally part of the Ironman portfolio, LAVA Magazine (LAVA), the two-year-old publication targeted at the serious triathlete, now has new ownership. LAVA will now be owned and operated by LAVA Media LLC, a group of private investors with a long-term tie to the triathlon community.

“Ironman is in the business of creating extraordinary races and event experiences, not publishing,” said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer of Ironman brand owner World Triathlon Corp (WTC). “We are delighted for LAVA to thrive under new ownership and look forward to watching and helping the magazine grow.”

According to SEC filings, LAVA Media LLC is registered in Solana Beach, California.

John Duke, the former Publisher of Triathlete Magazine, who started LAVA in partnership with WTC in early 2010, remains in the picture. Duke is a director of the new LAVA Media business. Also on board as directors at LAVA Media are: Active Network CEO Dave Alberga; Active Network President Matt Landa; and Matt Michelsen, CEO and founder of Backplane, ‘a social web community that unites people around interests, affinities and movements.’

LAVA Media LLC, will own and operate the magazine’s print, online and digital properties. Ironman and LAVA will continue a partnership, and LAVA will be designated as the Official Magazine of Ironman.

LAVA will also retain its current staff with Heather Gordon in the role of Publisher.

This year at DealerCamp – taking place at Deer Valley Resort, Park City, Utah on 24-26 July 2012 – exhibitors will have another tool in their customer relations tool box. Using a free smartphone app coupled with cloud based software, participating brands will have device-based lead retrieval at their fingertips. There will be no additional cost for the app, as fees will be met by DealerCamp organizer Lifeboat Events.

“DealerCamp exhibitors will be able to capture conversations and visits anywhere, anytime during their stay at camp,” said Lance Camisasca, President of Lifeboat Events. “Additionally, the ability to add action items and notes to leads, run real-time lead analysis reports, and follow up instantly by tapping attendee’s telephone and email address makes this a real enhancement to their participation.”

Camisasca added, “We are working continuously to add value and productivity to exhibiting time at DealerCamp. We felt that, with so much time on the handlebars and away from laptops and notepads, we could help everyone maximize their expo time with this simple and effective tool.

“It’s backed up and synched on a secure website, and it’s all right there when you need it. Everyone’s follow ups will be more accurate and complete. I know lots of shows offer this sort of thing for a charge, but as an up-sell it loses value. This is a DealerCamp investment in our customers and we think it’s critical.”

The iLeads app and software will be available to all 2012 exhibitors at DealerCamp.

Campagnolo has unveiled the details of three new product groups for 2013: new Athena, Centaur and Veloce triple transmissions; new 10 speed 12-27 and 12-30 sprockets; and new 52/36 cranksets.

New Triple transmissions: Athena, Centaur and Veloce
From today, it no longer matters if the road ahead of you is a steep incline or fast, flat and level.
With the wide range of ratios offered by the most complete, highest performance triple drivetrain on the market, you’re well prepared for any situation.

In keeping with its philosophy and history, Campagnolo has created the triple crankset with what the company calls the best ‘U’ and ‘Q’ factors in its class. According to the company, this offers tangible benefits to the rider: derailing speed and precision of a par with double drivetrains, and perfect hip-knee-foot alignment for maximum pedalling efficiency and maximum joint protection.

Campagnolo has also developed the first ultra-light hollow aluminium cranks. The front derailleur has been completely redesigned, while the rear derailleur, which is now also available with a long rocker, is the same as the component used with the standard 10 and 11 speed version.
3 sets are available:

Athena 11-speed, in Deep Black and Bright Silver versions

Centaur 10-speed, in Deep Black and Black&Red versions

Veloce 10-speed, in Deep Black and Bright Silver versions

New 12-27 and 12-30 sprockets
Two new Centaur configuration sprocket combinations have been revised and improved from the ground up. The new machined profiles of the individual sprockets and their teeth, and the synchronisation geometry of the sprockets themselves are the same as those used in Campagnolo’s range-topping products.

In addition, with a special surface hardening treatment and a geometry synchronised perfectly with the Teflon coated Centaur 10 chain, the new 10 speed sprockets are extremely quiet and durable.
These new combinations offer a broader choice of ratio range than was possible with the previous combinations in the range, for a sprocket solution suitable for all road types, from flat and level terrain to the steepest incline.
The following sequences are available:

12-27: 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-27

12-30: 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27-30

Weight 12-27: 268g

Weight 12-30: 300g

New 52/36 cranksets
Go compact or standard? How many times do cyclists ask themselves this same question before a race or before purchasing a bicycle? And for amateur cyclists in particular, this can be a very common dilemma.

Campagnolo provides a solution in its 2013 range with the new crankset with 36/52 chainrings which, used in conjunction with one of the 5 sprocket options, represents a choice for both long, straight and fast roads and more challenging uphill climbs.

Why 52/36 rather than any other combination? According to Campagnolo, the reason is simple. The company wanted to offer the broadest range of ratios possible (16), but with no loss in the vital prerequisite of derailing quality. This crankset offers the same derailing speed and precision as standard or compact components.

The new 52/36 cranksets have been developed for all 11 speed Campagnolo sets – Super Record, Record, Chorus and Athena (carbon version) – and are available with cranks in the different lengths 165 – 170 – 172.5 – 175.

These components boast lightness: 663g for the Athena Carbon, 690g for the Chorus, 40g less for the Record (650g), and just 607g for the Super Record.

The 52/36 Super Record and Record cranksets are also compatible with the Campagnolo EPS electronic drivetrain.

Triathlon New Zealand (Tri NZ) has appointed Shanelle Barrett to the position of Technical Manager for the national governing body.

Barrett is no stranger to the sport, having previously worked full-time in the Tri NZ office setting up the technical programme. This role was subsequently taken up by Penny Skaife when Barrett left to return to her home town of Taupo and work in the events industry.

Barrett is hugely respected in the sport, both in New Zealand but globally for her work as a Technical Delegate with the International Triathlon Union (ITU) where she has officiated at the highest level and will again feature at the London Olympic Games.

Tri NZ Event Director Haidee Stratford is delighted to have once again secured the services of Barrett, as Skaife moves on to a new role with Gym Sport New Zealand.

“This feels a little like ‘back to the future’ with Shanelle’s appointment to run the Technical Programme. There has been so much time and energy invested in this aspect of the sport and Shanelle was instrumental in much of that early work that has since been carried on superbly by Penny.

“Quite simply Shanelle is a wonderful asset for the sport and for Triathlon New Zealand, I have no doubt that her passion for the sport and world class knowledge of the technical area will see Tri NZ continue to lead the world in developing world class programmes and technical officials, all of which adds hugely to the quality of our endorsed events throughout New Zealand.”

Barrett’s focus is on training and developing officials to ensure they receive the necessary support in their roles in order that Tri NZ can supply world class officials to local and international events.

“I am so pleased to once again be working with Tri NZ in an area I am passionate about,” said Barrett. “I hope to be able to share the knowledge that I have gained from the experiences at events to date and also with the high level events that I will be attending in the next couple of years with the Olympics in London and Youth Olympics in Nanjing.

“Initially I will be analysing where the programme is currently at, to see where we can make improvements. I will then work with ITU to get the NZ Technical Pathway accredited. This will mean a clear pathway for officials looking to aim for officiating at the Olympic games in future years.

“We will also start to look at ParaTri and ensuring the officials are trained for these events so we can move forward with having more triathlons available for Paratriathletes.”

Shanelle Barrett will take up the role on a contract basis, working from her base in Taupo but spending considerable time on events and with technical officials around the country.

ISIS Equity Partners has completed an investment in Inoveight Holdings Limited, the company behind the minimalist run shoe brand Inov-8. The investment by ISIS will support the business in continued expansion into new markets and further develop Inov-8’s established track record of new product development.

The transaction was led by Mark Advani and James Titmuss (2010 English Fell Running Team Gold Medal winner) from ISIS’s Manchester office.

Mark Advani and Adam Holloway of ISIS will join the board at Inov-8. It is worth noting that both Mark and Adam previously held board seats at online multisport retailer Wiggle, which was sold to Bridgepoint in December 2011 in a deal worth £180 million. (Wiggle continues to list a wide range of Inov-8 run shoes.)

Wayne Edy, Inov-8 founder, said “The management team and I are delighted to welcome our ISIS partners to the board, their expertise in working with dynamic, rapidly growing young businesses will be invaluable to the management team as we scale up our operations to meet growing international consumer demand.

“Finding an investment partner that understands the opportunities and potential created by new technology and innovative thinking in all areas of the business was crucial to accelerating our growth plans.”

Inov-8 is a performance sportswear brand primarily focused on technical off road running, functional fitness and minimalist road running products. Selling to customers in 58 countries across the globe, the brand’s major markets include the US, UK and Europe.

The unique design philosophy around Inov-8 products keeps the foot close to the ground when performing so that athletes can feel and adapt to the terrain beneath them allowing for improved proprioception and performance.

Inov-8 was founded by Wayne Edy in 2003 when he designed the first in a line of award-winning off-road running shoes, the mudroc 290. This original model gained acclaim in the mountain running community when Melissa Moon, a New Zealand born mountain runner won the 2003 World Mounting Running Association Trophy wearing a pair of mudroc 290s borrowed from a British friend.

In 2009 the brand began developing products for the fast growing US functional fitness market after it became clear that some off-road products were being adapted for different uses. The development of functional fitness products ‘turned already rapid expansion into explosive growth in 2011.’

In order to manage this rapid international expansion, Edy enlisted the support of Robert Perkins who joined the business in 2009. Robert has overseen the creation of a product development and marketing hub in the Lake District, in North West Englnad, as well as the integration and expansion of a US head office in the Boston area. The business has an international team of 44 with 17 new members of staff appointed in the last 12 months.

Mark Advani, Partner at ISIS Equity Partners added, “Inov-8 has an incredibly inspiring story so far. Wayne and Robert deserve immense credit for building the business from a singular racing product to a global brand of choice for committed athletes around the world. Inov-8 designs and makes great shoes for achieving and aspiring athletes. We are really looking forward to working with them to take the brand to the world. ”

Trek has unveiled a Jens Voigt-themed paint scheme designed for one of the world’s most popular rouleurs, just in time for the Amgen Tour of California. The all-new ‘Shut up Legs’ scheme pays homage to one of cycling’s most respected competitors and a nod to one of the more popular post-race quotations attributed to him.

Along with the famous quote printed along the top of the top tube, reminding its rider of the hardman’s philosophy of controlling the body with the mind, a weathered wolf’s head is emblazoned on the seat and head tubes, speaking to Jens’ uncanny ability to seemingly always lead the pack. The bike also incorporates statistics from Voigt’s long career as a professional cyclist, with the numbers hidden inside the fork legs and within the downtube logo.

Never short for words, Voigt had a lot to say about the design throughout the concept and development of the bike. “I was thrilled when Trek said they wanted to do a bike for me,” said Voigt. “We went back and forth about the theme and I talked a lot about the way I approach racing and going for the attack and we came up with this really cool wolf theme. It’s pretty aggressive but I feel like it fits.”

“We wanted to incorporate some of the accomplishments of his huge career so we asked Jens to talk about his career and to list some interesting statistics from his years on a bike,” said Trek VP Joe Vadeboncoeur. “He came back with the standard stuff, ‘64 pro wins, 15 years as a pro, 35 wins as an amateur’ but what was really unique, and this just speaks to who Jens is; was that he included things like ‘100 crashes, 11 broken bones, 25 screws or pins, 1300kg of pasta eaten’. It was an amazing list that he had kept and we’ve incorporated all of it into the details of the bike.”

The bike will be raced at Tour of California, with a replica on display at Trek’s festival space at each stage. Voigt’s bike is the latest edition in a line of rider-inspired paint schemes crafted by Trek’s in-house Creative Design Studio. Last year during the 2011 Tour de France, Trek unveiled limited-edition paint schemes for Frank and Andy Schleck as well as the popular ‘Spartacus’ bike for Fabian Cancellara.

Ironman brand owner World Triathlon Corp (WTC) has confirmed a global sponsorship with Aquadraat Sports that designates it as the Official Water of Ironman. In addition to providing water for Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races around the world, Aquadraat Sports will also be the title sponsor of the Ironman US Championship taking place in metropolitan New York and New Jersey on 11 August 2012.

This latest sponsorship deal firmly places Aquadraat Sports in the world of triathlon. It is also interesting to note that the Aquadraat Sports was one of the official local partners of the ITU World Triathlon San Diego event last weekend. Here, the water brand joined Active Network, Gatorade, PR*Bar, TYR Sport and ZOCA as official local event partners in San Diego.

Aquadraat Sports in global deal as Official Water of Ironman
The inaugural Aquadraat Sports Ironman US Championship will include nearly 3,000 athletes from 46 states and 41 countries, nearly 5,000 volunteers and more than 200,000 total spectators, in one of the largest media markets in the world.

“We are excited to have Aquadraat Sports as a partner across Ironman and 70.3 events,” said Erik Vervloet, Chief Marketing Officer of Ironman. “Water is arguably the most crucial product on our race courses and having consistency at events around the world will be good for our athletes.”

Aquadraat Sports, with the company slogan Water for Life, claims to produce one of the most unique waters on the planet. ‘Quickly absorbed into the body’s cells and carrying extra oxygen, Aquadraat enhances cellular respiration and supports the body’s ability to meet demands for increased energy production.’ Aquadraat has reportedly been shown to increase exercise capacity and to stimulate an overall feeling of well-being.

“As we expand our footprint globally and launch Aquadraat Sports in the United States, we want to align ourselves with athletes who can directly benefit from consuming our product,” said Marcel ter Stege, Chief Executive Officer of Aquadraat Sports.

“There is no tougher event than Ironman, and Aquadraat gives triathletes the fuel their bodies need to develop and sustain peak levels of fitness and health. Top Ironman competitor Yvonne van Vlerken has been drinking Aquadraat for years and her fantastic results speak for themselves.”

The global sponsorship was reached in conjunction with sports marketing and entertainment company Wasserman Media Group.
